Nobel Prize in Chemistry - Quasiperiodic Crystals

International Awards

Distinguished Prof. Dan Shechtman
Technion – Israel Institute of Technology

The scientist discovered a new class of matter – quasi-periodic crystals. In quasi-periodic crystals, atoms are ordered aperiodically, like tiles in medieval Islamic mosaics. Previously considered impossible by conventional crystallography, this discovery forced scientists to change the definition of “crystal”. The discovery won Prof. Shechtman the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
